Call To Action: What I Can Do And What You Can Do Too
The purpose of this project is to educate people on the current Natural Hair Movement and the important aspects of Black hair in order to provide people with the knowledge needed to understand Black hair and gain respect for Black peoples’ personal and communal space. By educating people on this topic I hope to combat negative ideas that people may have about naturalistas and Black hair and I hope that as a result people become more aware of their views and mindsets that may need to be unlearned, resulting in reduction of microaggressions and unwarranted invasion of personal space.
My Call To Action is to ask site visitors to do one of two things (or both):
1. Go to your local library and check out the book Hair Matters: Beauty, Power, and Black Women’s Consciousness by Ingrid Banks. This book is a great start for gaining a more in-depth understand of Black hair and it's importance in regard to Black women's identity
2. Take a vow to never ask another Black woman (or man) if you can touch their hair because you are fascinated by it. Our hair is not a spectacle.
